Don’t forget your India delivery capacity halves around Diwali

Diwali 2026 lands on Sunday 8 November, and the India-based teams you depend on will be part-staffed for the best part of a fortnight around it. If you have a go-live, a release, or a support-critical window in early-to-mid November, plan for the gap now — not in late October when it is too late to move anything.

Who this is for

  • CTOs and heads of delivery running offshore or nearshore teams in India
  • Programme managers with go-lives, migrations or cutovers scheduled for early-to-mid November
  • Anyone whose 24/7 support or on-call rota leans on an India-based team
  • Vendors and outsourcers you rely on for either build or run

What’s happening

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with the five-day festival running roughly 5 to 10 November. In practice, many India-based delivery teams take leave across a wider window than the public holiday itself — the days either side of the main festival, plus travel home and back. Expect effective capacity to drop by a third to a half for the best part of two weeks, not for one day. Approvals slow, code-review queues lengthen, and the quiet assumption that “someone is always around” stops holding.

Why it bites

The problem is rarely the festival. It is pretending the festival is not there. A release scheduled for 6 November with a rollback plan that assumes full staffing is a release with no rollback plan. An incident on 9 November met by a skeleton on-call rota is an incident that runs long and reports badly. And because leave is staggered rather than uniform, the gap does not show up as a single blocked-out calendar entry — it shows up as three key people all being out on the one day you needed them, which is far harder to spot in advance.

The one thing to do before the date

Map your early-November critical windows against your India team’s actual leave — this week, in writing. One concrete action: get a named coverage plan for 5 to 10 November 2026 from each team and vendor, listing who is on, who is off, and who owns escalation. If the answer comes back vague, treat that fortnight as a freeze window and move the go-live. A confirmed plan or a moved date is fine. An assumption is not. For where this sits inside broader delivery and continuity planning, see my services.

Advisory is day-rate or fixed-scope; delivery capacity is priced per squad per month, with no long lock-ins.

If your November plan needs hands rather than advice, my sister delivery practice can drop a vetted, timezone-overlapping squad in to hold the line through the festival window — talk to me before October and we will have cover in place while your India team celebrates.

Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. Your coverage plan wants to be signed off by the end of September.

Most technology problems are not technology problems. They are control problems.

The systems exist. The investment has been made. The question is whether leadership can understand, direct, evidence, and sustain what those systems produce. Find out where control exists — and where it only appears to.
